Chili Sauce


Grandma Lula Vandegrift

Makes 3 to 3-1/2 quarts


18 ripe tomatoes, finely diced

6 large onions, finely diced

3 green peppers, finely diced

4 cups sugar

2-1/2 cups vinegar

2 tsp cinnamon

1-1/2 tsp allspice

1 tsp nutmeg

1-1/2 tsp cloves

3 tsp salt


  1. Finely dice tomatoes, and place in large pot. Cook over med heat until tomatoes are cooked down. Drain the extra liquid. It takes a long time to cook, be patient.
  2. While tomatoes are cooking, finely dice onions and green peppers
  3. Once you drain the extra liquid from the tomatoes, add the onions and green peppers
    1. Again cook down slowly, and add all other ingredients
  4. Place in quart jars while hot
